Education at Hope School

Mission

To provide free and good English language tuition to Cambodian children and young adults. This will allow them to improve their English language literacy and their future career likelihood and in the course of that, to also reach out to their souls for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Location & Amenities of Hope School (Updated Mar 2024)

We are glad to announce that we are running 4 Hope Schools, namely Old HS@ Siem Reap, New HS@Siem Reap, HS@Krobayriel, and HS@Ron TaEk. The schools cater to the children and young adults living in that area. The students generally travel to the school on their bicycles or motorbikes. Those who live nearer to the school walk there.

The original school is located on the ground floor of a residential house. The upper floor is lived on and owned by the landowner. The open ground floor is rented by the school.

The classrooms of this first school are paper partitions erected along the stilts of the house above. Tables and chairs are wooden planks nailed to the dirt ground. There is one light bulb installed in each classroom to accommodate the evening English lessons.

There are two full-time teachers, one teaching at Old HS@Siem Reap and the other teaching at HS@RonTa Ek. The full-time techer at Old HS@Siem Reap lives within the school in a small shed behind the classes. Another two part-time teachers are employed to teach the kids in the evening at the other two schools.

We are thankful that we managed to buy a piece of land for New HS@Siem Reap. Together with whatever finances we had and support from friends and relatives, we managed to build a building at New HS@Siem Reap. This building is also used as a dormitory for students who live far away and need a place to stay when they return from work and to learn English at New HS@Siem Reap.

The third school at Krobayriel is actually in the front yard of Teacher Ravy's house. He gracefully allowed his house to be used as our third school, HS@Krobayriel.

Our fourth school, HS@Ron Ta Ek, is housed within the land of Teacher Davan. When the government reclaimed our school at Poor Community and had the villagers move to Ron Ta Ek, Teacher Davan was affected too, and he gave a part of his land to be used as HS@Ro Ta Ek.

Education provided by Hope School

Daily Class Schedule

English lessons are conducted throughout the day from Mondays to Fridays. Each English lesson is about 1 to 1 1/2 hour each. The school provides various levels of English lessons to the children and young adults living in the nearby area:
  • Head Start
  • New Head Way with 3 levels: Beginner, Elementary and Pre-Intermediate.
  • Let's Go
  • Essential Book One
  • Grammar Skills
  • Conversational English Classes (for young working adults)

Each student is supposed to pay USD$1 monthly to pay for the textbooks and the stationery. However, as most of the students are unable to pay, they are allowed to attend the classes free of charge, so that poverty will not be an obstacle to education.

  • 8.30am - 9.30am - Let's go II textbook
  • 9.30am - 10.30am - Let's go II textbook

Needs of Hope School

Some of the past needs of the school were:
  • The need to buy a piece of land instead of renting. However, this need is currently met by a sponsor who provides the funding for the monthly rental of the school.
  • The school is unable to provide any simple refreshments for the students. A sponsor from Singapore is providing USD$120 monthly for the refreshments - biscuits and hot beverages - for the students.
  • The salary cost of having a full-time English teacher and a few part-time teachers. This need is currently supported by a sponsor who provides the monthly salary of the full-time teacher and 1 part-time teacher.

Some of the current needs of the school are:
  • There are rainy and flooding seasons in Siem Reap, Cambodia. During these times, the school becomes flooded. The flood level is usually quite high. The teachers create a makeshift path for the students to reach the classroom without getting too wet.
  • The lack of English teachers for the growing demand of students in Hope School and their extension school located 1 hour away from Siem Reap town.

Thanksgiving

Even though the school faces challenges, there have been people outside the school and church who are assisting to meet these challenges in order to allow the children and young adults to secure their opportunity in learning English:
  • A one-time donation of folders containing biscuits, notebook and stationery to each student in Hope School in January 2014.
  • A one-time sponsorship of a TV set, CD player, VCD & DVD player in January 2014.
  • A one-time sponsorship of refreshment utensils in April 2014.
  • Building roof for Hope School (Krbayriel) in 2021
  • Started Hope School (Ron Ta Ek) in 2023.
  • Providing tables and benches for Hope School (Krobayriel) in 2023
