Rainy Season

With the rainy season here, Old Hope Sschool has been badly flooded again. For students’ safety, all classes are suspended and students are to remain at home until further notice.

A New Learning Centre

We are delighted to celebrate the opening of a new learning centre in Sihanouk village. This centre gives children in the community a safe and welcoming place to learn, develop their skills, and grow in confidence. It will provide new opportunities for education and help children build a brighter future for themselves and their village.

Meals for Sen Chay Government School

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but a nourishing meal each week helps keep hunger away for students at Sen Chay Government School. Through Allan’s generous donation, students at Sen Chay School and two other government schools were able to enjoy a decent and fulfilling meal. For many of these children, this regular meal is an important source of nourishment. The meal may be simple, but its impact is significant. We are deeply grateful to Allan and his generosity is making a meaningful difference in the health and education of children in these communities.

Meals for Hope Schools

Thanks to Allan’s continued donations, nutritious meals can be provided to students at all Hope Schools. Although these meals are simple and not a luxury, they are filling and provide the nourishment children need to stay healthy. Allan’s generosity makes a meaningful difference in the lives of many students and supports their education and well-being.

Activities at Hope Schools

Our teachers are regularly supported through Foo Yong Kwong’s monthly contributions. This generous support helps us support part of our teachers monthly salary. Despite their salary not matching those offered in the education sector, the teachers make many personal sacrifices to educate, encourage, and guide the children in our schools. We express our heartfelt gratitude to Foo Yong Kwong for this faithful support.

Fun At New HS

Teacher Sophea has always been innovative in managing New Hope School. At times, she plans games instead of conducting a regular lesson, making learning enjoyable and encouraging students to look forward to coming to school.

We were also glad to inform all that we will support the staff with a small monthly allowance for him to run the Community School hat was started by an Australian couple but classes did not kick off. The students in this Community School at the poor communities were so keen to learn English that they ask Teacher Pai when classes will start again after the December break.

Hopefully, we can continue to provide whatever we had for the benefits of the youngster in Siem Reap.

As we closed this year, we look at the last 2 events held in Dec 2018. A group from ITE that came to do up the flooring of the 2 classrooms and the 2 teacher's dorm and the Year End Party.

1.  New Year and Christmas Party for students
Hope School held a Christmas and New Year Party for all the students and their friends. And for the 1st time, the older students planned and carried out the whole activities. They will be the next generation leaders and they had shown their compassion and leadership in running the games, serving refreshments to the students.

Bravo to these students!!!

2.  Community Services by ITE students

Thankful to God that there was a group from ITE that came to do up the flooring of the 2 classrooms and the 2 teacher's dorm.
The tile floor makes the teachers' dorm more conducive for living as they had been living in a tiny shed for the past 3 years.

Graduation month!!! It's our 2018 Graduation Ceremony. This is the time when we recognised  the effort of our students and promote them to the next level.

This will  be the last year that we are promoting students based on our old curriculum. We will be starting a new curriculum based on the book entitled "Family and Friends" consisting of 6 levels.

Students were having great fun after the ceremony and thanks to our friend, we were able to provide a better refreshments and better graduation gifts such as complete set of stationery  and exercise books.

God bless and we hope for a bigger group of graduates next year!!!

Hope School has a new teacher!!! Teacher Dy had followed his heart to be a teacher at a government school. He had decided to pursue his desire and had tendered his resignation in early Oct. We are glad that we have Teacher Devan who was helping Teacher Dy. He took a small pay cut as we are unable to pay him what he was previously paid. See him in action on the photos and videos uploaded.

Welcome Teacher Devan!!!

It was quite a buzz at Hope School in Sep. We had quite a few visits.

Firstly, Hope School received its first students’ community project from ITE College Central. Working hand in hand with Hope School students, they assisted in the construction of the wall for the teachers and painting of all the tables and chairs at both schools. It was not an easy task but rather a back-breaking work which very few Singaporean students had experienced.
Our heartfelt graduation to the students and teachers from ITE College Central.

Next, Hope School hosted Mr Ng Tiong Lian and Mr Thomas Phng on 18 Sep 2018. They were there to recce for a Dec community trip with their students. Instead of just looking around, they took time to conduct some teaching and having fun interacting with the students. Hope School students were really enjoying their visit!!!

It never fails to amaze us on the enthusiasm of Teacher Thon. We are grateful to Teacher Thon, the only “surviving” pioneer teacher of Hope School. Not only "surviving" but he is an ideal role model, always humble, always sacrificing for the students and had never complaint of overworking.

Just look at the number of young students attending his class! He has a great chemistry with the kids of Hope School

Thank you Teacher Thon!!!

Hope School wants also to be a blessing to the community too.  We offered the “school” for the local teachers to conduct their remedial classes. Very bare, consisting of handmade benches and a heavily used whiteboard, yet many students that came for the classes.

Looking for more ways to be a blessing to the surrounding communities.

With great joy, we are glad that through the support of friends and relatives of Hope Schools and after 5 years of existence, Hope School now have a proper building with brick walls and permanent roof to house our students. To be franked, it was not an easy journey, from purchasing a piece of land, building temporary shelters to start classes as soon as possible and finally a building. Much of the cost were from our own pockets as we sincerely seek to give whatever we can for the benefits of the students.

None of us seek any returns for this work as we labored for the last 5 years. We believed more great things will happen at Hope School in the years to come!

Our heartfelt and sincere thanks to all who had contributed in one way or another to the construction of this building!
Thank you and God bless all.

We were also very thrilled and encouraged to know that 2 of our current students of Teacher Dy, Pai and Vireak, started 2  classes in their own village, a poor village with small houses about 50 families and about 10 minutes driving from New Hope school.

They had the vision and compassion wanting to transform their community and transform the children’s lives through English education.

For a start, together with Hope School Principal, Phearun, they gave some books and pencils and also cooked some Khmer Curry noodle/snack for the children in this village, just to make them happy and enjoy their study time.

We are really glad by empowering these students they will, in turn, bring these blessings back to their own village.

Hope School 5th Anniversary

It's been 5 years since Hope School started. It's been a great blessing and joy to know the teachers and students, and to organise small volunteer groups to teach the students.

The volunteers are not professional teachers, but carry with them this hope to interact and inspire the students to reach for bigger dreams and a greater future. It is passing on our blessing of being proficient in English to them, knowing that this skill can bring them far in their life journey.
The testimonies from the students encourages us that we are doing the right thing in equipping them for better career prospects and hopefully a better future. The testimonies from our volunteers are a testament that their hearts and lives have also been changed by the humility and hunger of learning by the students.
Siem Reap is a special area in all our hearts, and we look forward to each trip in reconnecting with the students, catching up with the teachers, and forming new memories with everyone.

Allan Tan had created a series of video on this visit and celebration. Enjoy the videos

It thrills us to see students reading passages from the text book.
The video shows 17 year old Mr Makar, who is in grade 10, reading a full passage! When he joined Hope School, he was not able to even read a simple word but now is at least capable of reading a passage. This is the outcome of the hard work of the teachers at Hope School.
Let’s continue to support these students so that they will be able to converse in English which will be a great means to a better standard of living.

Small but yet great IMPACT!

We are glad that the support that we provided for Hope School may be small but the effect is tremendous. The happiness of the students, each having just a loaf bread and a cup of soft drinks is obvious through their wide grin!
