Rainy Season

With the rainy season here, Old Hope Sschool has been badly flooded again. For students’ safety, all classes are suspended and students are to remain at home until further notice.

A New Learning Centre

We are delighted to celebrate the opening of a new learning centre in Sihanouk village. This centre gives children in the community a safe and welcoming place to learn, develop their skills, and grow in confidence. It will provide new opportunities for education and help children build a brighter future for themselves and their village.

Meals for Sen Chay Government School

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but a nourishing meal each week helps keep hunger away for students at Sen Chay Government School. Through Allan’s generous donation, students at Sen Chay School and two other government schools were able to enjoy a decent and fulfilling meal. For many of these children, this regular meal is an important source of nourishment. The meal may be simple, but its impact is significant. We are deeply grateful to Allan and his generosity is making a meaningful difference in the health and education of children in these communities.

Meals for Hope Schools

Thanks to Allan’s continued donations, nutritious meals can be provided to students at all Hope Schools. Although these meals are simple and not a luxury, they are filling and provide the nourishment children need to stay healthy. Allan’s generosity makes a meaningful difference in the lives of many students and supports their education and well-being.

Activities at Hope Schools

Our teachers are regularly supported through Foo Yong Kwong’s monthly contributions. This generous support helps us support part of our teachers monthly salary. Despite their salary not matching those offered in the education sector, the teachers make many personal sacrifices to educate, encourage, and guide the children in our schools. We express our heartfelt gratitude to Foo Yong Kwong for this faithful support.

Fun At New HS

Teacher Sophea has always been innovative in managing New Hope School. At times, she plans games instead of conducting a regular lesson, making learning enjoyable and encouraging students to look forward to coming to school.

The raining season had started and it had affected the number of students attending the classes but still we are glad to see some still attending the classes despite the flood. This is how hungry some of the students are!!! So let’s not be fainthearted because of these minor setback.

As we are seeing our new land at Hope School being been flooded, we decided to take the opportunity of the coming election whereby permits are easily obtained for construction work.

We are aiming to raise the land to above the road level which will ensure that Hope School will not be flooded and to at least to construct a concrete floor and the columns for future wall.  This will give us a better environment to have classes without much disruption.  To do just these, we need about US$7500 and to show our commitment, I will match dollar to dollar, up to a max of Singapore $5000, which is the best I can do.

Do support us, as every dollars collected will be used solely for this building project

Hope School has made commendable progress since 2013. It has two branches now and help has reached many more poor village kids. We are now officially running Hope School at 2 locations. The old one is still on going, while the new one is slowly building up with more students.
We are able to do so because of generous donor like Mrs Jessie Yin, who had committed to assist us for a year, in topping up the pay of the part time teacher to be converted to a full time teacher at the new location. So now have 2 full time teacher, one at each location.

In buying this piece of land at the new location, it provides a much needed space for the students to be involve in wholesome activities. Was so glad that the students were having fun playing volleyball at the new location. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so well applied to Hope School students!!!

This is the model that I had wished for, to replicate more Hope Schools at various villages, by God’s grace and by supporters who believed in our work.

Hope School received a visitor this month! The visitor is from BBLC (Boys' Brigade Learning Centre) in Siem Reap. (Their Facebook link is here.)
Picture
The visitor brought stationery supplies for the students and dictionaries for them to use too! The students are so excited and glad to receive these supplies! What a joy to see the communities in Siem Reap helping and blessing one another in such tangible ways!
The students were also able to enjoy simple tasty refreshments this month too. This may seem like a small effort but the refreshments help to ensure that when the students are present for lessons, they don't have to attend it with empty stomachs.
The students enjoy their lessons and the fun activities conducted by the teachers!
Hope School's safe premises also ensure that the students are able to play games freely too!
Thank you all for your great support to Hope School and the students!

It is so exciting whenever there are new updates on Hope School! Classes are being added at the permanent site of Hope School.
Picture
Teacher Thon has moved to teach 2 classes at the school site with a mixture of existing and new students.
The rest of the classes are headed by the young Teacher Dy. The new school is certainly establishing itself in the new village as a school offering free English classes to children and youths.
It is always a joy to see the students putting in so much concentration and effort into learning English!
The students really enjoy the new school site! They were so engrossed in the books from the library. Look at them reading the books! Such great concentration!
The students also enjoy the monthly refreshments. Look at their delighted faces!
The new site also has a space for volleyball and for the students to hang out after classes. They love it! By the way, they really love volleyball! It is like the unofficial national sport.
The teachers and volunteers are also growing fruit trees in the backyard. Just like the growing trees, the fruits of investing education into the students can only be seen in the future. What a great metaphor and analogy!
Another good news is the addition of a volunteer teacher conducting conversational classes for the older students. This happens every Saturday or Sunday at 5.30pm to 7pm. The new volunteer teacher is residing in the village and is a tour guide who is able to converse fluently in English and French. He is someone who is so passionate to teach the next generation so that some of them can be a tour guide like him. What a great blessing!

Computer classes will be starting soon as more laptop donations come in. Computer literacy adds another skill for them to have a better future and career. So do keep the donations coming in still! The students will benefit greatly!

This new school is certainly becoming a hub for education, a safe environment for them to play games and a place to nurture and inspire dreams! Great job to all the staffs and volunteers of Hope School!

We have a great announcement to share with everyone! As of January 2016, lessons have started in Hope School's permanent site! Yay!

The staffs have gotten a new fence and banners to announce the presence of Hope School in this new compound. The new fence will help to ensure safety for the students and the teacher.
And speaking about teachers, we will like to formally introduce teacher Dy, who is now Hope School's newest addition! He is now part-time teacher and was formerly a student of Hope School. He completed his high school education and had a passionate dream of becoming a teacher. For now, he is being trained by Hope School's staffs and mentors to become the next full time teacher, like teacher Thon!

Teacher Dy is in charge of all the classes taught at Hope School permanent site, while Teacher Thon is still continuing the classes at Hope School. There are plans to slowly bring Teacher Thon and his classes over to the new site in the next few months. At least for now, Teacher Dy is the only teacher at the new site.

Introducing teacher Dy!
Currently there are 3 classes started with students from the new village. The classes timetables are:
- 4:00pm-5:00pm
- 5:00pm-6:00pm
- 6:00pm-7:00pm

More classes will be added from next month onwards. The classes are:
- 8:00am-10:00am
-
 2:00pm-4:00pm

All the students in Teacher Dy's classes are from the new village that Hope School permanent site is located in. Say hello to the new faces!

The class shown above are from the 4-5pm classes. Look at how dedicated and eager they are at learning! Teacher Dy also looked very happy to teach them!
Most of the students travel to Hope School permanent site by cycling. Some who stay nearer to Hope School walk there.
It gets really dark at night, but classes are still ongoing. Electricity is in place to ensure that the the students are able to read and write at night.
On top of teaching, Teacher Dy also helps to care for the land. Many different seeds have been planted to ensure that there will be plentiful of fruits for the staffs and students. One of the vision of Hope School is to be a place of learning for generations of children and youth for a better future. And just likes the young plants growing, it is a symbol for the investment of education to the children and youths of Cambodia, for them to grow with the "nutrients" - education and opportunities - to become strong and be a blessing to their country. What a prophetic act and reminder of the plants!
In a new place, new items need to be added to ensure the running of the school. A new water filter was purchased to ensure that the students have a constant and clean source of water. A water hose for the watering of plants was also purchased. And another important aspect of Hope School is the stone table and chairs. It is a meeting and fellowship point for the students to meet up, catch up and have fun.
The students and Teacher Dy were also able to enjoy the monthly refreshments! The students had bread and a drink at the end of the lessons. Look at all their happy faces!
One main feature of Hope School that was gone for a few years is the volleyball court. Volleyball is one of the favourite past times in Cambodia, and finally the students have a safe place to play that after their lessons!

Congratulations to Hope School for this new chapter and continue the good transforming work in Siem Reap, Cambodia!
With this good news of lessons starting in Hope School's permanent site, we like to seek donations for laptops that are in good working conditions.

The staffs have shared with us that there is a huge demand for computer literacy and classes in Siem Reap, as such classes are currently only offered in the main town and have a monthly school fee of at least US$80. This is out of reach for most of the students, who are either elementary or high school students. Even though they are working, their income is not enough to ensure that they are able to afford such lessons after paying for their essentials.

In view of this, we hope to start computer literacy lessons soon for the students. Hence, if you have an unused laptop that is still working well, please contact us through the Facebook page. Thank you to all Hope School supporters for your continued support, and for your generosity too!

As the year comes to an end, it was encouraging to see the students were still coming to classes faithfully! Classes were full even till the night. See how focused the students were!
Teacher Thon also interviewed and assessed a potential student for Hope School. He looked so serious about it! Good luck to the new student!
Picture
To end off the year, the students had a special treat for the monthly refreshments - crackers! Each student received a pack and enjoyed it at the end of their classes.
Here are to good memories made in the year 2015! May everyone have good luck and be filled with a year of greatness and hope for 2016! Happy new year!

The Singapore volunteer team headed to the village extension school located 1 hour away from Siem Reap main town (by tuk-tuk). The village extension school was part of the church's outreach efforts to provide English language classes to the students. Classes were held on the weekends.
Picture
Rough location of where the village extension school is at.
The long journey showed the volunteers the landscape of villages and small towns situated further away from the hustle and bustle of Siem Reap main town. There were a lot of farms where cows roam and rice were being harvested.
The volunteers brought many supplies along to the village extension school: the refreshments, goody bags and the graduation gifts. Here was a shot of the volunteer team!

The tuk-tuk slowed down when they arrived at the village extension school. It was located within a farming compound and could not be seen from the outside.

The extension school also served as a house church for the villagers. Before the graduation ceremony began, there was a 1 hour devotion where the villagers and the children sang songs during worship.

After that, Sebastian gave a short speech on encouraging the students to learn English. The students were enraptured by his speech and paid full attention to it. His words really motivated them greatly!
After that, the Singapore volunteers took the students for a fun time of games! They played many different types of games, and were surprised when more students joined in right after their classes ended!
In the midst of the games, Phearun, Thon and Vansan helped to distribute the donated clothes from Singapore. The villagers were so happy and thankful for these donations! It would help their families in the long run, especially their children!
After the games were over, the students all gathered back for the graduation ceremony! Excitement was thick in the air!
The graduating students sat down on the mats, waiting patiently for the graduation ceremony to start. They each took turns to receive their certificates and graduation gifts. The volunteers helped to pin their badges too. Look at their class photo!
The students ended the graduation ceremony by enjoying the refreshments! The kaya sandwiches were singlehandedly prepared by Sebastian in the morning. He had painstakingly spread the kaya on each piece of bread and neatly packing them for the long journey to the school! The students simply enjoyed their refreshments! The cool beverages also helped to cool them down.
Throughout the course of the graduation ceremony, the volunteers took many photos with the villagers and the students!
It was time to say goodbye after the graduation ceremony ended. The students left either by foot or by their bicycles. It was heartwarming to see so many young people so passionate about learning English! Surely the village extension school helped them to secure their wishes!

Did you know that the village chief is a lady? It was so rare to meet one from the female gender! What a great blessing!
The group photo with all the students of the village extension school! Cheers!!

And with that, the volunteer trip to Hope School came to an end. To all students: continue to work hard and pursue your dreams! With education, you will be empowered and equipped to do what you want to and to contribute in the development of your country. You have many people supporting you in your learning journey! Cheers and continue fighting on!

The day came where the students of Hope School were either promoted to the next level or graduated! We were so blessed by the sponsorship of these beautiful medals! It was sponsored fully by a generous vendor, who chose to remain anonymous. Thank you for blessing the students with this!
Picture
The students were also very blessed by donors for the other graduation gift - English to Khmer dictionaries. This thoughtful gift was meant to motivate the students to learn English on their own. It was a special graduation gift for each of the students.
The tent for the graduation ceremony was set up yesterday. All ready for the graduation ceremony today!
Picture
The volunteers arrived early in the morning, but the students were even earlier! They were all excited about the graduation ceremony and could not wait for it to start!
A group of student volunteers stepped up and helped in the preparation of the refreshments for everyone who was present. They prepared kaya sandwich, a special jam that is unique to Singapore. So thankful for their service!
The programme started right after that. Brother Vansan, Teacher Thon and brother Phearun were the main emcees of the event. Teacher Thon shared about Hope School and the hope of equipping the younger generations with a good grasp of the English language. Brothers Vansan and Phearun helped in the games portion. The students loved it!
The Singapore volunteers - Charlyn and Chloe - then led some mass games for everyone to participate. There were much laughter and joy among the students. Some even left with a prize! It sure did look fun!
Each of the student then received their personalized graduation certificates and the graduation gifts. Many of them held their gifts and certificates tightly. They were pleasantly surprised that the bookmarks inside the dictionaries were all individually and specially handwritten by the past and present volunteers' well-wishes for them. Congratulations to all students!
The next highlight was the refreshments! The students took their seats in the various classes while the sandwiches and drinks were being given out. Many of them were able to have second round too! Where there was food, there was also fellowship.
Towards the end of the graduation ceremony, the students hung out with each other and continued playing games. Some even stayed until the end and helped to tidy up the place.
Great memories were formed on this special day. Congratulations to all students of Hope School! Continue the good and hard work, and we hope to see more graduating students next year!

The rainy season was well underway in Cambodia. There was slight flooding at Hope School and attendance dipped quite a bit. Hope School students had to brave through the rain and muddy puddles to get to class.
But for those who came, they were rewarded with the dedicated and passionate teaching of Teacher Thon, and some nice refreshments too! This month's refreshment was bread with condensed milk, a favourite of the students!
To all the students of Hope School, we're so proud of you on this learning journey! Never lose this fighting spirit of yours. Your future is for you to build and develop!

As July came, she brought with her the start of the rainy season. If you have not been to Cambodia before, the rain pours from the heaven!
Despite the rain, classes still continued on. The teachers believed that if the students were committed in coming to school in spite of the rain, then classes would not stop. Their trust and belief in the students were rewarded greatly.
There had been many elementary school students who came to Hope School after their school lessons. They enjoyed the English lessons thoroughly! Most of them traveled to Hope School by either walking or cycling from their schools.
For students who attended the lessons, they were treated to refreshments! The students always looked forward to refreshments. This month's refreshments were bread with condensed milk. Even though it was a simple type of refreshments, the students absolutely loved it! It was a time of bonding with each other and with their teachers.
The general rule was that if you had a part in the preparing of the refreshments, you had the permission to partake in your hard work! See teacher Thon enjoying the fruits of his labour, while being surrounded by the satisfied smiles of the students! I'm quite sure the refreshments were tasty!
The students also did their part to wash their utensils. They used the water pump to wash their cups and sticky hands.
Even the night classes also had refreshments! No one was left out from it.
The students had an additional treat! Teacher Phearun also came to Hope School to provide haircut services! He is a talented teacher!
So here is it: the updates of July! The students love studying and learning English, and they also love their teachers. Continue to support them in their learning journey!
