Rainy Season

With the rainy season here, Old Hope Sschool has been badly flooded again. For students’ safety, all classes are suspended and students are to remain at home until further notice.

A New Learning Centre

We are delighted to celebrate the opening of a new learning centre in Sihanouk village. This centre gives children in the community a safe and welcoming place to learn, develop their skills, and grow in confidence. It will provide new opportunities for education and help children build a brighter future for themselves and their village.

Meals for Sen Chay Government School

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but a nourishing meal each week helps keep hunger away for students at Sen Chay Government School. Through Allan’s generous donation, students at Sen Chay School and two other government schools were able to enjoy a decent and fulfilling meal. For many of these children, this regular meal is an important source of nourishment. The meal may be simple, but its impact is significant. We are deeply grateful to Allan and his generosity is making a meaningful difference in the health and education of children in these communities.

Meals for Hope Schools

Thanks to Allan’s continued donations, nutritious meals can be provided to students at all Hope Schools. Although these meals are simple and not a luxury, they are filling and provide the nourishment children need to stay healthy. Allan’s generosity makes a meaningful difference in the lives of many students and supports their education and well-being.

Activities at Hope Schools

Our teachers are regularly supported through Foo Yong Kwong’s monthly contributions. This generous support helps us support part of our teachers monthly salary. Despite their salary not matching those offered in the education sector, the teachers make many personal sacrifices to educate, encourage, and guide the children in our schools. We express our heartfelt gratitude to Foo Yong Kwong for this faithful support.

Fun At New HS

Teacher Sophea has always been innovative in managing New Hope School. At times, she plans games instead of conducting a regular lesson, making learning enjoyable and encouraging students to look forward to coming to school.

Volunteering by newly wed couple!!!

We are always thankful to have friends volunteering at Hope School. It never fails to amaze us that without we asking, friend  or friends of our friends indicates the interests to spend some time at Hope School.

It was a great privilege indeed to have a newly married couple, Caron and Regina who took time out from their mini honeymoon to teach at Hope School. Foregoing the usual honeymoon of visiting places of interest, they spend 2 days at both the new and old Hope School, teaching English and having some games with the students.

Greatly touched by their sacrifice.

Students intense concentration!

The intense concentration shows the desire of the students in wanting to learn English. It clearly shows that Hope School is on the right track in providing free English classes to these students.

Our Faithful local Coordinator & also the Principal, Bro Phearun

Very often, we thanked our faithful teachers but let’s not forget the one behind the scene who look after both schools and buy refreshments every month without fail. The students had been enjoying these refreshments and all thanks to the effort of Bro Arun.

He manage both the Old and New Hope School, shuttling between the 2 schools to ensure that all are working fine, stepping in to teach whenever one of the teachers is sick or on leave. All these is done without us paying him a single cents!!!

Thank you Bro Arun for looking after both the Hope Schools.

Night class under a single bulb

Under one bulb, classes are conducted in the night. Hope School may be a journey from the students’ home and with not much lights available but yet the students were keen to learn as much as they can from the few laptops that were donated by Singaporeans. Such hunger inspires us to continue to support Hope School for as long as we can.
So let us, who are Singaporean, be thankful for the lights that came with just a flip of switch that brighten up our whole house.

A place for wholesome activities

We are glad that youngsters can have a game at the open space, while classes are on-going at 2 different sections of the school. It is great to see that Hope School will be a place for both mental and physical “enrichment”.

We hope to see more youngsters coming to the school during their free time as Hope School is a venue for wholesome living.

As Hope School start a new year, we decided to start afresh on the account to make it very transparent. An initially amount of US$1000 was put in, to start off the account for Hope School.
At this juncture, we would like to assure all that every cent contributed is used for Hope School. The various trips to Hope School, the airfares, accommodation and meals are all fully paid by ourselves. Even for the appreciation dinner and lunch we gave to the teachers and workers of HopeSchool, it comes from our own pockets and never from any contributions from our donors.
Henceforth, every cents contributed will be shown in the Hope School account worksheet. The account worksheet will be posted at the beginning of every month for all to see and for any queries.

For the monthly expenditure and donation, please see the page of expenses

Happiness from simple refreshments - bananas
Many thanks to Allan who contributed every month to the expenses of the refreshments. Students having a feast on bananas. Such joy from having bananas to eat with their fellow students.
We are so glad to see our students enjoying the simple refreshments provided. Not only are they enjoying the bananas but they are also enjoying the books that we bring over recently.

2.  Thank God that through friends and relatives, we were able to build a permanent roof with concrete column and foundation. This new building had really provided us with the needed shelter as we had experienced first-hand, how bad it was when it really pours in Siem Reap.

Hope School provides not only a venue for students to learn English but we are also providing a place whereby children at Siem Reap are able to have wholesome activities. Thanks to our friends who had donated a few badminton rackets and it was a joyous time for the students as they played games even with any court or netting. All they need is an open space and the games begins!! Such joy and happiness for the students with just any used rackets.

Besides allowing students to have wholesome activities, with the kind donation of a few laptops, we were glad to report that there are now 2 computer classes being conducted. It was a golden opportunity for the students as it is almost impossible for these kids to take computer lessons at a private centre as it cost US$50 a month just for a few session.
On behalf of Hope School, we would like to express our sincere thanks to donors of the badminton rackets and the laptops.  Cheers!!!

Hope School Graduation 2017

Hope School Graduation Ceremony 2017 was held on 26 Oct.  It was a time of happy faces for the students, the highlight event of our visit for the entire trip.

Day 1
We arrived at Siem Reap with my daughter Charlyn at 3pm. We had dinner with the teachers and local staffs in appreciation of their hard work.

Day 2
Today we taught the first lesson for the beginner class on the topic of Family. The students learnt to identify and spell the different family members and pets in their homes.

The second lesson was on feelings and attitude. We conducted a game of crossword puzzle for the students to find the various feelings and attitude.

We had lunch with the teachers/staff. Thereafter we went to reserve donuts for the graduation ceremony and to purchase some packs of London roll buns as an additional item for the gift packs.

During evening time, we started to prepare the gift packs for the graduation. Each student received a file folder containing a pen, a mechanical pencil, a ruler, a 3-in-1 Milo sachet and 2 London rolls buns.

Day 3
We had an impromptu last lesson: a 'jumble words' game. We took some papers and tore them into pieces on the spot. We made 2 sets of words for the 2 teams to compete. The students were enthusiastic and had much fun playing this game.

We picked up the order of 100 donut pieces in the morning and proceed to Hope School to prepare iced Milo for the students. Prescillia, who arrived the night before, was the person-in-charge in preparing the iced Milo with her assistant - Charlyn - helping out.

In Singapore, we celebrate Teacher’s Day but in Cambodia, our teachers and the students had a day when they can relax and had an enjoyable time at the beach.

This is a very rare occasion and is also the first time the adult students and teachers had a bonding time. This is the hardwork of Arun who is overall in charge of Hope School.

A great time gathering of students and teachers
Hope School is now conducting computer classes for students. It started from a handful of students, and now has grown to 2 classes!

Though there may be laptop with its cover in a bad condition, as long as it is in working conditions , it gives the students a chance to be computer literate.

No laptop is "too dirty" or cannot be used. As long as it is still in working conditions, it will be a great benefit to the students.

New building in operation.

Being creative, Hope School staffs improvised and create a “protected” classroom. They create walls using zinc so that classes are able to continue even when it rains. The students are protected from the rain and heat of the sun.
It's a simple idea but it is effective! Thanks to  Arun and all those who helped to build the walls.

Play time!!!

As we step into the 2nd half of 2017, we are really thankful for the many supports given to us.  We even had a friend who told us that he does not believed in us pumping in money year after year without having any return but yet he believed that what we are doing is for the good of the student in Siem Reap and contributed to the building of Hope School.

With such support, we managed to build more than what we initially intended to do. When we started our initial plans to build a permanent structure, all we wanted was  a raised ground, foundations, floor beams and the columns. Then when we finished, we realized that a roof is needed to make the building usable. Somehow, friends came in to provide the necessary funding to have the roof build as we had exhausted all our funds.

And so, Hope School wants to say to everyone “Thank you donor for the building, Hope School love you!!!”

It was celebration time!!! Hope School celebrated its 4th Anniversary on 29 Jun 2017.

4 years may not be long, but we have come a long way. Back then Hope School started with just an open space under a house, chairs and tables built by the local staff but thank God for providing a permanent land with a concrete building structure now. Initially there were only 2 to 3 classrooms for English lessons. Now there is at least 5 classrooms in both sites for English lessons benefitting students living in the surrounding 2 villages

All these would not be possible without God's providence and the support of friends & relatives who believe in our work. We thanked God and we pray that Hope School will continue to be a great blessing to the communities!

Thank you!!!
